How you go about designing a product? Umm.. it's complicated. I'll tell you where you're going wrong though.

In the mindmap, you say "Regular tube or of some other shape"(or something similar to that). That is where you're going wrong. You're assuming at the first stage itself that it HAS to be a tube.

Why can't it be a dispenser? What about something like a syringe? What about bottles? Yeah, at the first glance a tube might look better than any other option. That is because we HAVE been using tubes since forever.

If you want to redesign the container(tube) start from its function. Which is - containing toothpaste, prevent it from drying up(?) and dispensing toothpaste. There might be a 100 other ways to achieve that. 95 of those might be much more expensive than a tube, 4 might not be practical, but there always be that one way which is a better options. Even if there is no THAT one way, you'll think of 100 more ways. :D

Let me state an example here. Whiskey, always comes in bottles, right? Applying the same logic as the map here, one would have mentioned "Bottle in other shapes or the current one". But then, the designer couldn't have come up with tetra packs for whiskey packaging.
